FIGTREE young gun James Harrigan's Aussie Racing Cars national championship quest is back on the straight and narrow after an impressive effort at Eastern Creek.

Harrigan finished second overall at round two of the eight-meet series last weekend despite competing in a car he had never before driven.

The 20-year-old was offered fellow Aussie Racing Cars competitor Chris Clearihan's car after Harrigan's set of wheels was severely damaged in a recent high-speed crash at Adelaide.

Harrigan began the three-day Eastern Creek meet by qualifying on pole but his borrowed car experienced gearbox troubles in the first of the four races.

His team worked flat out for 90 minutes to change the engine and gearbox - crew members were still bolting pieces together as Harrigan made his way to the grid for the next race.

Their work paid off when Harrigan finished second in race two.

Harrigan then took a 100m lead at the first turn in the third race but the event was red-flagged.

Race four was abandoned because of rain, cruelling Harrigan's chances of first spot.
