what they said

'The sense of occasion and the pride that you feel when you're wearing your green and gold and you feel when you're part of a team, it's a feeling that gives you so much strength.'

- Cathy Freeman after winning gold in the 4x400m relay.

'You can do the brilliant stuff or really stuff it up, and I really stuffed it up.'

- Bronwyn Eagles explains why she only won silver in the hammer throw.

'I want to prove once and for all that I'm not trying to spoil (Thorpe's) party - he's trying to spoil mine.'

- Backstroker Matt Welsh before beating Ian Thorpe in the 100m backstroke.

'They're good time triallists, but they couldn't race their way out of a one-door room.'

- Australian sprint cyclist Sean Eadie, trying to stir up the English.

'When I saw him on the track I thought, "I've got to give it a go", so I did and I guess he had nothing left.'

- Australian marathon runner Andrew Letherby, who

sprinted past Kenya's Eric Wainana with 100m to go to

grab bronze.

'At the Commonwealth Games you always have the Great Brits supporting one another. And more power to them. We just don't have a lot of help in the Oceania region. We're out on our own.'

- Australian gymnastics coach Peggy Liddick accuses judges of bias.

'He didn't cheat today, that was the difference.'

- Australian squash player David Palmer explains how

he beat English rival Chris Walker.

'I didn't even grunt.'

- Aussie shot-putter Justin Anlezark describes his easy

passage through the qualifying rounds.

'I would have kept going even if my leg fell off.'

- Nathan Deakes, who endured agonising cramps to win

the 50km walk.

'There's only three triathletes on Norfolk Island, put it that way.'

- Norfolk Island triathlete Martin Cross explains how he got picked at the age of 46.

'I never had a problem with scumming and sweating and going through pain. It's not about the beauty, it's about how high you can jump.'

- Tatiana Grigorieva downplays her glamour-girl image after winning pole-vault gold.

'It's a country of love and freedom and peace, and I just wanted to win a medal for Australia to say thank you for giving me that chance to be part of that great country.'

- Algerian-born 1500m runner Youcef Abdi after winning bronze for his adopted country.

'Me knickers went up me bum.'

- English 400m hurdler Natasha Danvers had a good reason for her disappointing performance.

'The substance was proved not to be performance-enhancing - what was the problem?'

- Australian shooter Philip Adams after escaping punishment despite testing positive to a banned diuretic.

'Basically I've been given this body and I'm capable of anything. I'm only limited by my own imagination.'

- Australia's Jana Pittman, 19, after clocking the fastest 400-hurdles time by a teenager.

'I've just been tapped on the shoulder. I've got to leave the village now. I'm out. Out.'

- Brisbane runner Adrienne McIvor, dumped from the Northern Ireland team after being found ineligible to represent her adopted country.
